Very good runs from a yard pair on a lovely Spring day up on Lansdown
There were no prospects of relaxation in a warm Bath, as Denis sent My Ambition and Waterloo Sunset to contest competitive handicaps over a mile and twelve furlongs respectively - the last two races on yesterday afternoon's card. My Ambition was sent off fourth favourite in a field of a dozen, and suffered a rough first half of the race, not settling and checked in his position twice, so that he had to race right back in tenth. When the leaders slowed right up dramatically at the bottom of the track after a frenetic starting pace he was further unsettled, and it was only then that jockey Rob Hornby was able to find a clear route forward to follow the run of the eventual winner. My Ambition made very rapid headway on the ground he likes to then be a clear second by the two pole, but he was always a few lengths back from the winner and his exertions told inside the final furlong, when he tired and lost two places in the run to the line. At the post he was less than five lengths back in a respectable fourth place, and if he can settle better in a more smoothly run race then he will surely prevail again for the Racing Club owners.
Waterloo Sunset came very close to winning the final event, jockey Tyler Heard reporting that he travelled very well through the race, despite not relishing the firmness of the surface. Going very easily down the outside of the field he moved forward easily to the three furlong marker, and looked all over the winner as the last quarter mile approached. Tyler probably committed for home a little too soon, as Waterloo Sunset hit the front but then found the Kittow horse threaded through for a final effort inside him, and just outstayed the Adaay gelding in the closing stages. Ultimately beaten just a head, this was a great first turf run in only his second race after such a long lay off, and the prospect of racing next time on easier ground or an all weather track should see a return to the winners enclosure for Waterloo Sunset.
